산파술이란? 소크라테스의 대화 방법이다. 여기에는 소극적 측면인 소크라테스적 반어(反語)와 적극적 측면으로서의 산파술을 생각할 수 있다. 전자는 대화의 상대자로부터 논설을 끌어내어 무지(無知)의 자각을 유도하는 태도이고, 후자는 상대방이 제출한 논설이나 질문을 거듭함으로써 개념 규정을 음미하고 당사자가 의식하지 못했던 새로운 사상을 낳게 하는 문답법입니다. 소크라테스는 자기 스스로 이제 새로운 지혜를 낳을 수 있는 능력은 없으나 다른 사람들이 그것을 낳는 것을 도와 그 지혜의 진위(眞僞)는 식별할 수 있다고 하면서, 자기의 활동을 어머니의 직업인 산파에 비유해 산파술이라고 불렀다.
