우리 나라의 운동회는 1896년 5월 2일에 영어학교(英語學校)에서 평양의 삼선평(三仙坪)으로 소풍을 가서 영국인 교사 허치슨(Hutchison)의 지도 아래 화류회(花柳會)라는 운동회를 열었던 것이 시초가 된다.
당시의 경기종목은 300·600·1,350보경주와 공던지기·대포알던지기·멀리뛰기·높이뛰기·이인삼각·당나귀달리기·동아줄끌기(12인조) 등이었다.
