고구려 고분벽화
고구려 시대 고분은 석총과 토총이 있는데, 석총은 광개토왕릉(장군총)이 대표적이며 벽화가 없다. 토총은 벽화가 있는데, 고구려시대의 벽화고분은 당시 수도였던 통구(현 중국 길림성 집안현) 지방을 중심으로 한 압록강 유역과 평양을 중심으로 한 대동강 유역에 분포되어 있다.
지금까지 발견된 고구려 벽화 고분은 중국 집안(지안: 集安)의 20여 기를 포함해100여 기에 이른다. 3세기에 첫 등장한 고분 벽화는 생활풍속도가 주류를 이루다가 장식문양을 거쳐, 후기로 가면 악귀를 쫓는 의미의 사신도(四神圖)로 발전한다. 사신은 동아시아에서 크게 유행하고 인기를 모은 방위신(方位神)으로서 동쪽의 청룡(靑龍), 서쪽의 백호(白虎), 남쪽의 주작(朱雀), 북쪽의 현무(玄武)를 일컫는다.
생활 풍속을 주로 그린 벽화가 있는 고분으로는 안악 2·3호분, 각저총, 무용총 등이 있고, 사신도를 함께 그린 것으로는 쌍영총, 대안리 1호분, 강서대묘, 중묘 등이 있다.
