아우슈비츠
오슈비엥침(Oświęcim)이라고도 한다. 크라쿠프에서 서쪽으로 50㎞ 지점에 있는 작은 공업도시이다. 제2차 세계대전 중 독일 최대의 강제수용소이자 집단학살수용소인 아우슈비츠 수용소가 있었던 곳으로 유명하다. 그 터는 현재 박물관이 되어 있다. 폴란드명은 오슈비엥침이다. 철도의 교차점으로 화학·피혁·농기구 제조 등이 이루어진다. 13세기 이후 도시로 발전하였으며, 폴란드분할시대인 1772년 오스트리아에 귀속되었다가 1918년 폴란드가 공화국으로 독립하면서 폴란드에 귀속되었다. 제2차 세계대전 중에는 39년에 독일군에게 점령당하였다.
1940년 4월 27일 유대인 절멸(絶滅)을 위해 광분하였던 H.힘러의 명령 아래 나치스친위대(SS)가 이곳에 첫번째 수용소를 세웠으며, 그해 6월 이 아우슈비츠 1호에 최초로 폴란드 정치범들이 수용되었다. 그 뒤 A.히틀러의 명령으로 1941년 대량살해시설로 확대되어 아우슈비츠 2호와 3호가 세워졌고, 1945년 1월까지 나치스는 이곳에서 250만∼400만 명의 유대인을 살해한 것으로 추산된다. 이로 인해 ‘아우슈비츠’는 나치스의 유대인 대량학살을 상징하는 말이 되었다.
