베르사이유 궁전
원래 루이 13세가 지은 사냥용 별장이었으나, 1662년 무렵 루이 14세의 명령으로 대정원을 착공하고 1668년 건물 전체를 증축하여 외관을 가로축 부분이 앞으로 튀어나온 U자형 궁전으로 개축하였다. 1680년대 다시 커다란 건물 2동을 증축하고 남쪽과 북쪽에 별관과 안뜰을 추가하여 전체길이가 680m에 이르는 대궁전을 이루었다. 이때 정원 쪽에 있던 주랑을 '거울의 방'이라는 호화로운 회랑으로 만들고, 궁전 중앙에 있던 방을 '루이 14세의 방'으로 꾸몄다.
거울의 방은 길이 73m, 너비 10.5m, 높이 13m인 회랑으로서 거울이 17개의 아케이드를 천장 부근까지 가득 메우고 있고 천장은 프레스코화로 뒤덮여 있다. 궁정의식을 치르거나 외국특사를 맞을 때 사용되었으며, 화려한 내부장식을 한 '전쟁의 방'과 '평화의 방'으로 이어진다.
전쟁의 방에는 색조 회반죽으로 된 타원 모양의 커다란 부조가 있는데, 말을 타고 적을 물리치는 루이 14세의 위엄 있는 모습이 새겨져 있다. 남쪽에 있는 평화의 방 역시 유럽 평화를 확립한 루이 14세의 모습이 상징적으로 그려져 있다.
1783년 미국독립혁명 후의 조약, 1871년 독일제국의 선언, 1919년 제1차 세계대전 후의 평화조약체결이 거울의 방에서 행해지는 등 국제적 행사 무대가 되었다. 프랑스혁명으로 가구·장식품 등이 많이 없어졌으나 궁전 중앙부, 예배당, 극장 등을 제외한 주요부분은 오늘날 역사미술관으로 일반에 공개되고 있다. 프랑스식 정원의 걸작인 정원에는 루이 14세의 방에서 서쪽으로 뻗은 기본 축을 중심으로 꽃밭과 울타리, 분수 등이 있어 주위의 자연경관과 조화를 이루고 있다. 기본 축을 따라 라톤의 분수, 아폴론의 분수, 십자 모양의 대운하 등을 배치하였다.
대운하 북쪽 끝에는 이탈리아식 이궁(離宮)인 그랑트리아농(1687년)과 프티트리아농(18세기)이 루이왕조의 장려함과 섬세한 양식으로 세워져 있다. 1979년 유네스코(UNESCO:국제연합교육과학문화기구)에서 세계문화유산으로 지정하였다.
