미국 독립기념관
1776년 7월 4일 제퍼슨(Thomas Jefferson)이 〈독립선언서〉를 발표한 장소이자, 제2차 대륙회의(1775) 집회장소로 사용된 역사적인 건축물로, 미국의 독립기념관이다. 1732년에 착공해 24년 만인 1756년에 완공되었고, 설계는 변호사 해밀턴(Andrew Hamilton)이 맡았다. 건축양식은 18세기 조지안 양식을 사용하였다.
원래는 잉글랜드 퀘이커교도들이 세운 펜실베이니아 식민지의 정부청사였다. 이후 1800년 수도를 워싱턴으로 옮길 때까지 10년간 연방정부청사로 사용되었고, 1787년에는 연방헌법이 통과되는 등 미합중국 탄생에 결정적 역할을 한 곳이다.
붉은 벽돌로 지어진 건물 가운데 하얀 시계탑이 솟아 있고, 중앙 건물 좌우에 회랑으로 연결되는 부속건물이 하나씩 있다. 이 중 왼쪽 건물에는 독립선언을 채택할 당시의 회의 모습을 그린 그림이 벽에 걸려 있다. 건물은 전체적으로 장중하지는 않지만, 매우 단아하면서도 깨끗한 느낌을 준다. 1830년부터 1950년까지 여러 번에 걸쳐 개수되었지만, 건축 당시의 원형이 훼손되지는 않았다.
홀 앞쪽의 광장 가운데에는 '자유의 종'이 유리 전시관에 보존되어 있다. 원래는 홀 중앙의 첨탑에 달려 있었는데, 건물의 안전 문제 때문에 1976년 지금의 위치로 옮겼다. 주변의 자유의 종, 카펜터스홀, 시청사 등 기념 유적들과 함께 미국 국립역사공원으로 지정되어 있다.
관람시간은 7~9월에는 9시부터 20시, 그 외에는 9시부터 17시까지이며, 입장료는 없다. 필라델피아에서 가장 유명한 관광명소이며, 1979년 유네스코에서 세계문화유산으로 지정하였다.
