하회양동마을
풍산 유씨(柳氏)의 씨족마을인 안동 하회마을(중요민속자료 제122호)과 경주 손씨와 여강 이씨의 토성마을인 경주 양동마을(중요민속자료 제189호)의 두 민속마을로 이루어진다. 2010년 유네스코(국제연합교육과학문화기구)에 의해 세계문화유산으로 등재되었다.
안동 하회마을은 민속적 전통과 건축물을 잘 보존한 씨족마을로, 낙동강 줄기가 마을을 싸고 돌면서 ‘S’자형을 이룬 태극형 또는 화부수형(蓮花浮水形)의 지형을 보인다. 류성룡(柳成龍) 등 많은 고관들을 배출하였고 임진왜란의 피해를 입지 않아 전래의 유습이 잘 보존되어 있다. 경주 양동마을은 한국 최대 규모의 대표적 조선시대 동성취락이자 유서 깊은 양반마을이다. 아름다운 자연 환경 속에 많은 조선시대 상류주택을 비롯해 양반가옥, 초가 160호와 나지막한 돌담길이 이어지며, 전통문화를 잘 간직하고 있다.
14~15세기에 세워진 두 마을은 한국 씨족마을의 대표적인 사례로, 한국인의 전통적인 삶이 그대로 전승되고 있는 생활공간이다. 무성한 숲으로 둘러싸이고 강과 농경지를 바라보는 경관과 배치는 조선시대 초기의 유교적 양반문화를 보여준다. 이곳에서는 주거 건축물, 정사(精舍), 서원 같은 전통건축물들이 서로 잘 조화되고 전통적 주거문화, 조선시대의 사회구조, 유교적 양반문화 같은 전통이 오랜 세월 동안 지속되고 있다. 또한 문집·예술작품, 유학자들의 학술·문화적 성과물, 공동체 놀이, 세시풍속, 전통 관혼상제 등 다양한 무형유산이 온전히 전승되고 있다.
