중국의 역대 왕조들이 북방 유목민족의 침공을 막기 위해 세운 성벽으로 ‘장성(長城)’으로 줄여 부르기도 한다. 중국을 최초로 통일한 진(秦)나라 시황제(始皇帝) 때에 처음 건립되었다고 전해지지만, 오늘날 남아 있는 성벽은 대부분 15세기 이후 명나라 때에 쌓은 것이다. 길이가 서쪽의 간쑤성[甘肅省] 자위관[嘉峪關]에서 동쪽의 허베이성[河北省] 산하이관[山海關]까지 2,700㎞에 이른다. 지형의 높낮이 등을 반영하면 실제 성벽의 길이는 6,352km에 이르는 것으로 알려져 있다. 중국의 상징처럼 여겨지는 문화유산으로 1987년 유네스코 세계문화유산으로 지정되었다. 그리고 ‘인류 최대의 토목공사’라고 불리며 2007년에는 세계 7대 불가사의 가운데 하나로 선정되기도 했다.
