세계문화유산 고인돌
한반도에 사람이 살기 시작한 시기는 대략 70만 년 전 구석기시대로 추정된다. 기원전 1000년 무렵에 이르면 원시 농업 경제 사회라 이름할 만한 단계의 청동기 시대가 시작된다. 농업과 목축업을 생활화한 이 시대의 가장 큰 특징은 구리를 주 원료로 주석이나 아연을 섞어 만든 청동기를 도구로 사용했다는 점이다. 농경의 발달로 인한 잉여 생산이 생기면서 사회집단 내부에는 다스림을 받는 자와 다스리는 자가 생겨나기 시작하고 청동기를 사용하는 우세한 지위를 가진 권력자도 나선다.
청동기는 대부분 ‘지석묘’라 불리는 고인돌에서 출토되고 있다. 고인돌은 말 그대로 ‘돌을 고였다’ 하여 붙여진 이름으로, 청동기 시대의 대표적인 무덤 형식이다. 무덤 속에는 주검만을 묻는 것이 아니라 그 안에 토기나 석기, 청동기 등의 다양한 유물을 넣기도 하므로, 무덤은 그 시대의 사회상을 파악하는 데 매우 중요한 유적이 된다. 더군다나 고인돌은 박물관의 전시실이 아닌 자연 현장에서 뚜렷하게 대면할 수 있는 거의 유일한 청동기 시대 유적이다.
고인돌은 전 세계에서 발견되고 있지만, 특히 중국과 우리나라, 일본 등 동북아시아 지역에서 많이 발견된다. 그 중에서도 우리나라는 실로 ‘고인돌 왕국’이라는 표현을 쓸 만큼 많은 수의 고인돌이 발견되었다. 지금까지 남한에서 약 3만여 기, 북한에서 약 1만 기에서 1만 5천 기에 가까운 고인돌이 발견되었는데, 이는 세계 고인돌의 40퍼센트 이상에 해당하는 수이다.
