HD Metal Frame (A1) (Horizontal)
창덕궁
1963년 1월 18일 사적으로 지정되었다. 1405년(태종 5) 완공되었으며, 면적 43만 4877㎡이다. 태종(太宗)이 즉위한 후 1404년(태종 4) 한성(漢城)의 향교동(鄕校洞)에 이궁(離宮)을 짓기 시작하여 이듬해 완공하고 창덕궁이라 명명하였다. 그 후 계속 인정전(仁政殿)·선정전(宣政殿)·소덕전(昭德殿)·빈경당(賓慶堂)·여일전(麗日殿)·정월전(淨月殿)·옥화당(玉華堂) 등 많은 전당을 건립하였는데, 1412년 돈화문(敦化門)을 건립하여 궁궐의 면모를 갖추었다.
이 궁전은 1592년(선조 25) 임진왜란 때 소실되었는데, 1607년(선조 40)에 그 복구가 시작되어 1610년(광해군 2)에 중건이 거의 끝났으나, 1623년 3월에 인정전을 제외한 대부분의 전각이 실화로 불탔으므로 1647년(인조 25)에야 그 복구가 완료되었다. 그 후에도 크고 작은 화재가 여러 차례 있었는데, 특히 1917년 대조전(大造殿)을 중심으로 내전 일곽이 소실되어 그 복구를 위하여 경복궁 내의 교태전(交泰殿)을 비롯하여 강녕전 동·서 행각 등의 많은 건물이 해체 전용되었다.
창덕궁은 많은 재앙을 입으면서도 여러 건물이 비교적 잘 보존되어 왔는데, 1912년부터는 후원인 금원(禁苑)과 아울러 인정전을 관람할 수 있게 하였고, 8·15광복 후에도 창덕궁과 금원을 공개하고 있다. 창덕궁은 금원을 비롯하여 다른 부속건물이 비교적 원형으로 남아 있어 가장 중요한 고궁의 하나이다. 1997년 12월 유네스코 세계문화유산으로 등록되었다.
