석굴암
석굴암(石窟庵)과 불국사(佛國寺)는 신라 시대에 만들어진 고대 불교 유적이다. 석굴암은 불상을 모신 석굴이며, 불국사는 사찰 건축물이다. 두 유산은 모두 경주시 동남쪽의 토함산(吐含山)에 있으며, 약간의 거리를 두고 있다. 두 유산은 8세기 후반에 같은 인물이 계획해 조영하였으며 비슷한 시기에 완공되었다. 석굴암은 화강암을 이용해 인위적으로 쌓아 만든 석굴로 원형의 주실 중앙에 본존불(本尊佛)을 안치하고 그 주위 벽면에 보살상, 나한상, 신장상 등을 조화롭게 배치하였다. 불국사는 인공적으로 쌓은 석조 기단 위에 지은 목조건축물로 고대 불교 건축의 정수를 보여 준다. 특히 석굴암 조각과 불국사의 석조 기단 및 두 개의 석탑은 동북아시아 고대 불교예술의 최고 걸작 중 하나로 꼽힌다.
