한여름 베로나의 아침은 뜨겁고 투명했다. 동네 산책을 나왔다가 숙소로 돌아가던 길이었다. 한 사람이 겨우 지나갈 수 있을 정도의 길을 따라 작은 가게들이 줄지어 있었다. 그중 과일이 가득 올려져 있는 가판대가 내 시선을 끌었다.
여름엔 꼭 복숭아를 먹어야 한다. 한 입 베어 물었을 때 가득 고이는 달콤한 과즙이 텁텁한 갈증을 달래주기 때문이다. 아침으로 먹을 복숭아 한 바구니를 사서 가게를 나왔다.
걸어가는데 어디선가 자꾸만 향긋한 냄새가 났다. 바구니에 코를 가만히 대었더니 달큼한 향이 흘러넘치고 있었다. 결국 참지 못하고 길거리에서 하나를 꺼내 물었다. 역시 여름은 복숭아의 계절이었다.

- Although it is extremely resilient, an extended exposure to intense heat may cause it to deform.
