경상도 시리즈 - 창원2 가슴로고형
경상남도의 시. 경상남도 최대도시로 경상남도청 소재지이자 비수도권에서 유일한 특례시다. 한국의 기초자치단체 중에서는 가장 많은 5개의 일반구가 설치되어 있고, 시의원 선거구도 18개로 가장 많다.
창원시는 경상남도의 중심 도시로 경상남도의 정치, 경제, 사회, 문화의 중심지다. 경상남도청, 경상남도의회, 창원지방법원, 창원지방검찰청, 경남지방경찰청, 경상남도교육청, 정부경남지방합동청사, 그 외 정부 부처 및 관계 기관들의 경상남도 청사가 상당 부분 창원시에 몰려 있다.
현재의 창원시 영역은 일제강점기 이전의 창원부 영역과 거의 일치한다. 1989년 부산에 편입된 천가면(현 가덕도동)이 사라진 것을 제외하면 대부분 같다. '창원'이란 명칭은 조선 태종 때 의'창'현과 회'원'현을 합쳐 부를 신설한 것에 기원하며 이후 조선시대까지는 줄곧 한동네였다. 이 두 지명은 현재도 일반구의 명칭인 의창구와 마산회원구로 남아 있다. 그러나 일제강점기를 거치며 1914년 마산부 분리, 1955년 진해시가 분리된 이후 2010년 7월 1일 다시 통합하기 전까지는 근 100년 남짓한 기간 동안 여러 개의 지자체로 나뉘어 존재해 왔다. 그러나 이 지역은 통합 이전부터 서로 긴밀한 관계를 유지한 곳이다. 기존 마산시, 창원시, 진해시 3개 시는 시내버스를 통합해서 운영했고, 오늘날 창원시의 주요 관문인 동마산IC를 비롯한 고속도로 출입구, 시외버스터미널 노선 또한 공유하는 등 교통, 문화, 인프라 부분에서 뿌리 깊게 연계, 협력하였고 지금도 인프라 상당 부분을 변함없이 함께 공유하고 있다.
경제 규모가 인구수 대비 상당히 큰 편이다. 2019년 기준 지역 내 총생산(GRDP)#이 약 39조 86백만으로 집계되었는데 이는 전국 기초자치단체 중 5위, 비수도권 기초자치단체 1위에 해당되며 대전광역시(약 43조 9백만), 광주광역시(약 41조 51백만)와도 비견되는 수준이다. 그만큼 내로라하는 국내 대기업 공장들이 많이 상주해 있는 곳으로, 외국계 글로벌 기업 사업장도 다량 위치해 있다.
